World No. 4 Daniil Medvedev continued his winning ways at Caga Magica by securing a victory in the fourth round by beating 17th seed Alexander Bublik on Tuesday (April 30). After losing the match 7-6(3), 6-4 in one hour and 44 minutes, Bublik’s ‘God’ comment to describe Medvedev went viral again.

The Kazakh star, who defeated his previous two opponents in three sets in Madrid, has yet to beat Medvedev despite playing six matches against him. During an interview with Vremya Tennisa, Bublik joked that it’s impossible to beat the Russian, calling him a “God“.

I played with Medvedev in the main draw. He's a God, descended from above. It's impossible to beat him. I have played against him in juniors, and never beat him.  Alexander Bublik said

With this win inside the Manolo Santana Stadium, Medvedev created a record of making it to the quarterfinals at all nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments. This made him the 10th active player to do so. He reached the last eight of the Madrid Open after knocking out Matteo Arnaldi and Sebastian Korda

Daniil Medvedev calls the match against Alexander Medvedev a tough one

Though Daniil Medvedev secured the win against Alexander Bublik in straight sets, he did not do it with ease. He had to tire himself out against the Kazakh’s drop shots.

It was a tough match. A lot of drop shots, and I got so tired in the end running for them. That's when you lose your concentration, and you start to play a bit worse. That's what happened, but after the match, he told me he was dead also. Daniil Medvedev said after the match

The 28-year-old will be playing his third quarter-final of this season and his 20th overall at a Masters 1000 event. He will next face either five-time champion Rafael Nadal or 30th seed Jiri Lehecka in the quarterfinals.

Medvedev faced Nadal six times, winning just one of the matches, at the 2020 ATP Finals. If the Russian faces the 14-time French Open champion, then it will be their first encounter on clay surface. They last met in Acapulco in 2022.

Medvedev locked horns with Lehecka just once, at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships, winning it after the latter retired mid-match. The Russian has not yet won a title this year, though reached the finals at the Australian Open and Indian Wells Masters.
